Chapter 15

Cassian hated to admit that he was panicking. Again. His back leaned against a cold boulder, protecting most of him from the cold night’s breeze. The backpack he had brought was being held and ransacked by Silas. Leah and Aeron had almost died, and both were too weak from the encounter with the kraken to fight, not that Cassian was doing much better compared to them.

Stars twinkled above him, and the moon covered the sand in its silver light. There was a slight breeze. The ocean filled the silence with its rhythmic waves. What should’ve been a beautiful and comforting scene terrified him. Turning his head too far, he saw the woman’s body. Cassian’s stomach did an uncomfortable twist as he tried to force the sight from his mind.

Across from the little fire in front of him was their captor. Silas poked at the fire as Sebastian prepared a meal. The smell of burning fish flooded Cassian’s nostrils. Sebastian had seemed just fine too. How could I be so stupid? I should’ve been more aware.

Leah’s head settled against Cassian’s arm. She breathed softly as she slept against his arm. Her clothes were still damp, and she shivered.

The day caught up with all of them. His body ached, and each movement brought sudden pain. A headache formed at the back of his neck, but in the midst of his body’s suffering, a new feeling flowed through his body—powerful and calming like the ocean waves that rolled in and out in the silvery moonlight. It pulsed with his heartbeat. It was comforting like a hug from his dad, warm and familiar.

Aeron sat on the other side of Leah. He huddled close to her, trying to warm himself up with the fire and the little body heat she had. His hair had dried slicked back, and the salt water made it stick in place. A small scar faded from time cut into his forehead from his hairline.

“What do you want?” asked Aeron. He refused to look directly at Cassian.

“You’re finally talking to me.” Cassian smiled. “I thought two hours was a pretty long time to pettily ignore someone.”

Aeron scoffed. “I could’ve taken him out easily.”

“Dude, you were shaking like a leaf. There was no way. He’d have shot all of us dead.” Cassian shifted so Leah’s head wouldn’t scoot further down his arm.

“Yeah, but dead is better than captured.” Aeron glared at the twins. “And I wasn’t shaking like a leaf.”

“You totally were.”

Sebastian stood up and walked over to them with a fire roasted fish for each of them and himself. He handed one to Cassian who took it gratefully. Aeron eyed him the whole time as he snatched his away from Sebastian.

“Leah probably won’t eat that,” said Cassian with a mouthful of hot fish in his mouth.

“But she needs to eat.” Concern filled Sebastian’s voice. “Though I particularly would not want to eat fish either. So would one of you like mine?”

As Aeron took the other fish, Cassian nudged Leah awake. She woke up speaking, panicked Lirithian, and grabbed Cassian’s arm.
